22nd Century: “World Wide Mind”  (Wed, Jan 17, 2007, 8pm EST) 22nd Century is an innovative new PBS series about technological advances taking place today that within our lifetimes will significantly change the way humans live and interact. Many scientists and futurists believe we are on the verge of a technological explosion so profound that life will become unrecognizable. In the next 100 years, we may experience as much technological change as has occurred over the course of human history. After all, during the past century we went from horse-drawn buggies to supersonic aircraft, and by most estimates the pace of change is accelerating.

Airing Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at 8:00 p.m. EST, this premier episode explores the concept of the “World Wide Mind,” an intriguing theory that posits that in the future miniature computer brain implants will allow our brains to be connected to other brains much the same way today’s computers are linked together via the World Wide Web. World wide mind is a terrible idea. I don't want to plug my brain into some network. I would lose privacy. I don't want some other people to know my thoughts. Plus, I don't have enough faith in humanity to do. All technology could be abused. Since computers linked to the Internet could be hacked and hijacked for bad purposes, this technology could be hacked. Some bad person could hacked into this system to initiate mind control. By the way, the Borg from the Star Trek are based on this concept of linked hive mind.

But it does not have to go sour if we don't let it? Sure there will always be hackers, criminals, sociopaths and free-loaders in any social system, yet precisely because they are a minority, they cannot sway the overall directive of any global mind/social order?

The Borg hive mind are depicted as the bad guys, like metal-head zombies, but ask yourself why is this? And why are they so scary to us? Because they oppose our ideas of freedom and individual expression!

The emerging global mind does NOT have to be this way! Although there are dangers to influencing global collective phenomenological consciousness and directing social order, any problems can be overcome by transparency and critical thinking by connected "individuals"?

Q: What price are you willing to pay for "Unity"?
