I agree on the "Singularity" being more of us being on the steep part of an S-curve. The arguments people show for technological acceleration show the pace of technological change speeding up, but as many people have learnt in science lessons, from just a few points of data it's hard to extrapolate the curve you're on.

We may be heading on an ever-upwards curve which rockets to something near a mathematical singularity, or we may be on a sigmoid curve, and who can tell at what point that curve will level off or how steep it will get?

This is one reason I prefer Charles Stross' term of "The Acceleration" rather than Vinge's "Singularity" (although Broderick's "The Spike" is quite catchy, and evokes an upward spike in a general trend).
