Helping the Chilean miners survive with space science

George Dvorsky

Sentient Developments

August 29, 2010

Quite a story developing in Chile: the 33 miners who are trapped 700 meters underground will have to wait about four months before they are rescued. That’s obviously not going to be easy on the men who have been trapped for over 18 days already. Keeping it together psychologically, physically and socially for that extent of time will undoubtedly prove challenging.

Other ways the miners are keeping their psychological health intact:

"cards, a domino set on a crate and a picture of a topless woman on a wall"

And prayer.

I'm not sure what to think about the "They’ve also put the Lord of the Flies myth to rest" comment. Because in the book, they were kids.

Sending the miners Prozac, or a different antidepressant, might be the way to go.

Lord of the flies myth? Give it another month and it will be the Lord Of the Flies reality...mark my words.

Good article. I've been thinking about these poor guys. Nice to hear some positive things happening and on the way for them.

"Give it another month and it will be the Lord Of the Flies reality...mark my words."

Not if dope is sent down the pipe, that's what some in prison do; they get high as kites to kill the time. Send the miners dope and the time will be almost bearable. The miners need to be tuned in & turned on, they are already dropped out for several months.

...is my above comment advocating recreational drugs? No.
But for guys stuck for months in mineshafts, Yes. Four months or so in a mineshaft isn't impossible, but it is bad-- it is like four consecutive 30 day sentences in jail.
If there are strains of marijuana that don't make users hungry, it might work. In fact, the miners might want to stay there longer. They might say,
"Christmas? yes, but please wait 'til Christmas of NEXT year until you dig us out. And keep the marijuana coming."

I think that one of the miners is going to choose to stay in the mine.

The news reported:
"One of the trapped Chilean miners is going to have some explaining to do after his wife ran into his mistress at the mine's entrance.
Britain's Sun newspaper reports the wife of Yonni Barrios was stunned and upset to find his girlfriend also conducting a vigil for him."

Reminds me of the story, supposedly true of the Irish guy whose friends, for a joke, tricked him into thinking he'd won the lottery. He went home, told his wife he was leaving her for the girlfriend but his wife would keep the house and car. Whether there's a God or not, our sins do tend to find us out, eh?
