People hype work for funds. That's not cynical, just real. Egg frying laptops sound sexy. But hype goes both ways.

I agree about skewed reporting - New Scientist will throw the facts to the wind if it can make a point against "the superstitious" (ie people of faith) anyday.

I know what you mean about hype. LiveScience has scores of essays claiming that "this new discovery SHEDS LIGHT" on this or that theory. But when you read the article carefully, you'll see that almost every time, the new discovery does nothing but shed DARKNESS on the PREVIOUS theory.

This is a superb commentary about a problem that is quite significant in my opinion: among the (technically) naive people who see this kind of misinformation are many influential government and commercial decision makers, whose allocation of resources are consequently skewed.
