So much for high tech—what about high touch?

In a recently concluded poll, IEET readers showed a mix of attitudes toward the “scientific discoveries and technological accomplishments” of the last ten years. Now we want to know what you think about the social and political developments of that same period.

It was a decade that saw a spike in religiously inspired terrorism, an increasing polarization of political positions, disputes over the teaching of “creation science” alongside evolution, strong gains in the fight for gay rights, a largely unpopular and highly controversial U.S. President (George W. Bush) who tried to inaugurate a new era of conservative dominance, and a shaky if not moribund world economy (except in China). It also saw the election of the first African-American U.S. President, significantly increased ethnic and religious diversity (and tensions) in Europe, and continued general disarray among the nations of Africa.

If you need more reminders of the highs and lows of The Aughts, take a look at three best/worst analyses from Kyle Munkittrick, Kristi Scott, and myself.

Then please answer this question:

Looking back over the last decade, how would you assess the social and political developments of that period?

• Wonderful! Excellent! Fabulous!

• Very good. Quite encouraging.

• Fair, but nothing special.

• Sadly, going in reverse.

• Horrible. Terrible. Not good.

Feel free to add comments here or on the poll itself. Thanks!

Whooaaattttt.... I just did this new poll and checked the result ... I can't believe how quick the figure showed 100% "Sadly, going in reverse"... Something IS definitely not right with the world's social and political development!!!!!!

I don't think we're actually going in reverse; I think forward progress is just causing a lot of people who haven't changed to act out as the world changes around them.

"It was a decade that saw a spike in religiously inspired terrorism, "

I suppose you could've written: "It was a decade that saw a spike in Islamic terrorism." This formulation is more precise and doesn't paint quite a broad brush on all religions.

"a largely unpopular and highly controversial U.S. President (George W. Bush)... and ... the election of the first African-American U.S. President"

Wouldn't it be more fair to compare the two presidents at the same time into their presidency? According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approval_rating
"Obama joins the two most recent fellow Democrats (Clinton and Carter) and two recent Republicans (Reagan and Ford) in falling below 50% approval within the first year in office. While his predecessor, republican George W. Bush, enjoyed high approval ratings throughout his first years, Bush had very low approval numbers by the end of his second term. "

I can imagine that many people would like to add another option in the polls. For Democrats (Republicans), the choice would read something like: "it was a horrible (wonderful) first 9 years, but the last one was really good (bad)."
