Spinning the globe offers lessons in health care

We are 37th! We are 37th! No, this is not the cheer to be heard this week at a Notre Dame football pep rally. Rather, it is, according to the last rankings done by the World Health Organization, the chant appropriate for the U.S. health care system. What does the rest of the world know that we don’t?

The pressure is building to do something about our broken system.

Arthur Caplan serves on the Board of Trustees of the IEET. He is currently the Emmanuel and Robert Hart Professor of Bioethics and the Director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Dr. Caplan is the author or editor of 29 books and over 500 papers in refereed journals. His most recent books are Smart Mice Not So Smart People (Rowman Littlefield, 2006) and the Penn Guide to Bioethics (Springer, 2009). Dr. Caplan writes a regular column on bioethics for MSNBC.com and is a frequent guest and commentator on various media outlets.
