Genetics, Human Rights and the Next Phase of Human Evolution

Posted: Nov 15, 2007

The human genome is our common bloodline and our future. As geneticists continue to explore life at its molecular level, the challenge for geneticists, ethicists, and lawyers is to ensure that ethics and law keep pace. We must also ensure that the fruits of such research are applied without prejudice for the benefit of those who are living and those yet to be born.

“One Origin, One Race, One Earth: Genetics, Human Rights and the Next Phase of Human Evolution” will address legal and ethical issues attendant to genetics—issues that lead us into the heart of what it is to be human.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Dr. Gregory Stock, Ph.D.,  is a prominent U.S.  biophysicist and a recognized international authority on the impact of the human genome project on society, medicine and business. His best known book, Redesigning Humans: Our Inevitable Genetic Future, won the Kistler Award for Best Science Book of 2002. Gregory will speak about the promise that genetic engineering holds for the evolution of our species.

Margaret Atwood has been a dominant presence in the Canadian and international literary world for almost 40 years.   Drawing on her best-selling 2003 novel Oryx and Crake for inspiration,  Margaret asks where genetic research could take us if we leave our compassion and ethics behind.  After her speech,  Margaret will be taking questions from our delegates.
