Omnivores and Vegans Together
Posted: Sep 11, 2009
The family of IEET readers comprises all sorts of eaters, from full-on vegans to unapologetic omnivores.
Here are the results of a recently concluded poll asking our readers about their eating habits:

Now I find these results somewhat surprising, since I had thought, without a shadow of doubt, (and I would have put money on it), that the vegans had this poll well and truly in the bag?
Yet here we find that the omnivores have run away with the lead.
Which brings attention to a recent study by students from Canada's Carleton University, Iowa. Together with their maths professor they modelled a detailed statistical outcome that flesh-eating zombies may pose a real existential threat to humanity, (if indeed zombies do exist?) They concluded that the zoophagous undead would require very little time indeed to take over the entire world. And that the only way to prevent this vile conquest would be to act "fast and furious" and frequently to halt this overthrow.

Now for any avid Romero fans, (like myself), this is merely common knowledge and not news at all, and thus we really don't need a lesson in how to suck eggs. We recognise that it really all boils down to mere numbers, and that being outnumbered by expired carnivores that only desist through head trauma is no joke!
However all is not lost and there may yet still be hope for all of us. The key to success may rely in yet another ethical slant taken on the zombie genre from the recent remake of Romero's trilogy, "The day of the dead", directed by Steve Miner (2008). Here we have a scenario where "good guy" trooper Bud makes it through the first hour or so before he gets bitten and infected, and despite knowing full well the consequences, his comrades decide to take him with them in the back of the humvee.
How is this relevant to this poll? You may well ask, and here's the answer. Bud, despite being a thoroughly nice guy, turns into a zombie very fast, and for the comrades seated in the humvee next to him, this is worrying. Yet when they ask, "why doesn't he try to eat me?", Bud just snarls in total disgust, and his officer declares, "because he's a vegetarian!"
Now is there a lesson here?
I think there is. And I feel it is up to all of us strict, mild and mostly to come together, and try a little harder to achieve the vegan status, which ultimately may just prove to be the difference between 40 to 60% and the difference between salvation and destruction.
There is a lesson to learn here: the most vocal side in a debate is not always the actual majority.

Hi,
Small correction for the article- it should read Carlton University Ottawa, (Canada)
Oopsie...
Thanks Kayce!

Giulio, it's not a "debate." It's life-or-death... for animals, the planet, and even humans.
Did you know that the leading cause of death for animals in America is the same cause of death for humans in America?
It's meat-eating.
Billions of animals are killed needlessly in slaughterhouses simply in order to satisfy "unapologetic omnivores" who think it's perfectly healthy to eat dead animal flesh at each and every meal.
Millions of humans die needlessly from preventable and reversible heart disease, cancers, and type 2 diabetes, all of which stem from unhealthy, meat-centered diets.
Get real. Get honest. Get vegan.
Save animals. Save the planet. Save yourself.
These numbers, if even close to a statistical picture of IEET followers shows that vegan/vegetarian is way more prevalent than among the general populace.
Which would make sense on this site, since readers here are concerned with ethics, and for most vegans, their diet is a 100% ethical decision.
